In French-speaking Switzerland, Georges Darel (1892-1943), one of Ferdinand Hodler's closest collaborators, produced a profoundly different poster (
    The Swiss Army
). His style and his spirit are resolutely Hodlerian: the drawing is supported, the bright and warm colors, daring even like the yellow sky evoking dawn, posed in flat areas well cut. For the first time in the poster, the theme of the border guard sentinel appears, the image most used throughout the war to express the mission of the army. The monumental figure occupies most of the poster. The artist develops an effect of shadow and contrast: at sunrise, the silhouette of the soldier carrying his rifle, bayonet directed abroad, stands out against the sky and the black barbed wire against the white of the mountains. His attitude is voluntary and determined. Protective hero, his gaze goes far away. The army is attentive and stands guard. It is not shown in exercise but in its real function. The poster is direct and simple to understand. It is felt as such by the press:
Since yesterday, the public's attention has been kept in front of the display columns, by a very beautiful poster of the film "The Swiss army". It is the work of the Geneva painter Georges Darel, and is fully worthy of the magnificent film that it illustrates- 1918
This is an excellent VINTAGE reproduction of a Swiss Military recruitment poster of late WW 1.
